Wondering how you can prepare for the tornado season this year? Read on to understand how to prepare for tornadoes in Atlanta.

Double-Check Your Insurance Policy

It’s a good idea to review your insurance policies every year – before tornado season (March through May, typically) – and make sure that you have the coverage you’ll need to cover your expenses and costs in the rare event that a tornado damages your home or business. A commercial or residential public claims adjuster in Atlanta can help with this process.

Be On The Lookout For Severe Thunderstorms

Massive, heavy thunderstorms known as “supercells” are the cause of most severe tornadoes, due to powerful rotating winds within the storm clouds. To stay safe, make sure you keep an eye on the weather throughout the tornado season and are aware of any significant storm cells that could cause tornadoes. Keep your vehicles fueled and be ready to evacuate if there is a tornado in the area.

Know The Difference Between Tornado Watches And Warnings

A “Tornado Watch” means that the weather conditions are favorable for tornado development, but there is not a tornado on the ground, so there is no imminent threat. Still, you should stay tuned to NOAA radio, the TV or your weather app to make sure you know if a tornado is forming.

A “Tornado Warning” on the other hand, means that a tornado has been detected and touched down in the area. If you are in an area where a tornado warning is issued, you need to seek shelter RIGHT AWAY. If you have time, you may be able to leave the area – but if not, you will need to shelter in place.

Seek Shelter If You’re In The Path Of A Tornado

If a tornado is coming toward your home, it’s usually not a good idea to try to leave. Instead, get as low as you can – such as the first floor or basement. Stay away from windows, and go to a small, enclosed room like a closet, bathroom or interior hall for protection. However, if you are in a mobile home, you must leave the area immediately and go to a nearby secure building with a solid foundation where you can take shelter. Stay tuned to weather services for information about evacuation areas and nearby accommodations.
