Preparing for Spring: Hail and Tornado Season
You know the saying, April Showers bring May Flowers? Well, here in Georgia the saying should go more something like “When the seasons turn around, the tornadoes and hail come down”.
If you’re in Georgia, you know there’s something to be said about the springtime across the state. Although it can be a beautiful time of year to live here, it can also be unpredictable. One day, it may be warm and sunny and then the next thing you know, the weather can take a quick and drastic turn without any warning. Springtime may give us those lovely hints of summer but it also provides a dangerous opportunity for the perfect storm to brew. Expect the unexpected and prepare yourself and your property for those springtime storms.
When cool, dry air mixes with warmer, humid air — that’s when we get tornadoes and hail. Tornado warnings can happen anytime, anywhere so it is extremely important that you prepare yourself and your property ahead of time in case one unexpectedly hits. If you live in a tornado-prone zone, you should have an emergency plan in place for you and your loved ones. The first thing we recommend you do is to take an inventory of all your belongings. It can be as simple or as thorough as you want it to be but be mindful that the more evidence you can provide for your belongings, the better your chances of a maximized settlement from your carrier. The second thing we suggest is to create an established plan for shelter. Since tornados can be quite unpredictable in their pathways, it’s imperative that you have a plan in place to know where to take your family. The third thing we recommend is to get a Go Bag ready with important items like copies of your records & documents, an extra set of clothing, first aid, medications, etc.
Spring in Georgia is also notorious for large and highly destructive hail storms. Damage from these storms can often be as unexpected as when it hails itself because it can happen in a matter of moments. One minute it may be casually storming and the next thing you know there are balls of ice, the size of lemons, damaging your brand new roof. Sometimes if the hail storm is intense enough, it can brew into an unexpected tornado.
There isn’t anything like the smell of fresh, green grass and blooming flowers in the spring, but the South also has a serious reputation for producing some powerful storms this time of year. We predict this next storm season will be no different from recent years for hail and tornado records. If anything, we think these records will only increase! What do you think?
