The President of NAPIA asks state insurance commissioners to extend deadlines for insurance claims. Jeff O’Connor, NAPIA President, stated: “In these uncertain times, public insurance adjusters are stepping up to protect insureds.” In O’Connor’s letter to state insurance commissioners, he commanded them to take action to protect policyholders that experienced property loss. Insurance commissioners were asked to reconsider the deadlines that policyholders face, including deadlines dealing with proof of loss, replacement costs, construction restrictions, examinations taken under oath, claims reporting, and other arbitrary deadlines. Some of the insurance companies have willingly prolonged these deadlines. Additional states will need to extend deadlines, since COVID-19 may extend into the season for severe weather.
