HELPFUL TIPS DURING A FREEZE

Tips to follow:

OUTSIDE your Home or at your place of Business – do the following:
  • Trim weak tree limbs near roof, cars, power lines (if time allows)
  • Clear gutters so ice dams don’t back water into the roof
  • Park vehicles away from trees and under cover if possible
  • Shut off & drain outdoor spigots; cover them

INSIDE your Home or inside your place of Business:

  • Wrap exposed pipes (foam sleeves or towels + tape)
  • Let faucets drip (especially those that run from exterior-wall pipes)
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to circulate warm air

PREPARE FOR POWER OUTAGE:

  • Charge everything (phones, power banks, laptops)
  • Have light without flames (lanterns, headlamps)
  • If you own a generator:
    • Test it now
    • Stock fuel
    • Run outdoors only, far from doors/windows
  • Space heaters: tip-over protected variety only; keep 3 ft clearance
  • Thermostat: set slightly warmer than usual before the storm

FOOD & MEDICATIONS

  • Gather 3–5 days of food you can eat without cooking
  • Water: 1 gallon/person/day minimum
  • Prescriptions: refill early
  • If power fails: move frozen food to a cooler outside (when it is below 32°F)

PREPPING YOUR CAR

  • Avoid travel once ice starts—black ice is extremely hazardous
  • Fill the gas tank (prevents fuel-line freeze; allows warming)
  • Emergency car kit: blankets, shovel, traction (sand/cat litter), flashlight, snacks
  • Lift windshield wipers and pre-treat glass with de-icer

FOR YOURSELF

  • Do not walk under iced trees or power lines
  • Never touch downed lines—assume they are live
  • Use ice melt or sand on steps/driveways (salt works poorly below ~15°F)
  • Check on elderly neighbors before conditions deteriorate

IF YOU HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME

  • Fill bathtubs (for non-drinking water)
  • Move cars to the safest spot
  • Final device charge
  • Set fridge/freezer to coldest setting
  • Bring pets indoors
